ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In my mosaic art, I employ small, stained glass shards, tiles, or Italian glass smalti, using them as paint strokes.
When viewing mosaics in person, one processes the available light as an active element of the piece, adding a dimension to the experience not often found in other art.
I prefer to establish the relationship between art and viewer by using traditional subjects—
gravitating toward creating works that soothe or amuse rather than shock or instruct.
My favorite art transports me to another world so I am inclined to carry on that tradition.
My greatest reward is the reaction of viewers who don’t equate the word ‘mosaics’ to my work. Their surprise
assures me of a new appreciation of this art form as a legitimate contemporary medium of expression.

HORSES
As a shy, young girl, horses became my friends.
While they did not have a physical presence in my life, I drew them constantly and spent much time
obtaining information about my favorite racehorses. My first magazine subscription was The Thoroughbred Record
and pictures of Kelso, Buckpasser, and Secretariat adorned my walls instead of the teen idols of the day.
My mother correctly guessed that the gift of a summer at riding school was more desirable than a
sweet-sixteen party, and at last I could ride (and groom) the objects of my affection.
A nasty riding spill in college damaged a vertebra in my lower back and so I sensibly—albeit reluctantly—
watched and admired them from the sidelines.
Life intervened—a career in graphic design, an old house renovation and a passion for figure skating
stole my attention from my youthful devotion.
The decision to create fine mosaic art prompted the desire to depict the horse’s beauty in pieces of glass.
These noble animals, which had taken up residence in my heart,
had been patiently waiting there for me, all along.
